Bill of Sale 12yr Slave Lewis.jpg
No matter how you feel about the buying and selling of slaves, they were NOT considered of low value. This 12 year old male slave was sold for $1,000 which represented a HUGE amount of money in 1862. John Morris was considered one of the wealthier citizens of Hickman County with a total net worth of $12,000, so this slave represented almost 10% of his entire net worth

These 3 slaves may well be the ones mentioned in the WP Morris Letter as hiding in a cave. They were sold March 6, 1860 for $2,100 which was almost 20% of John Morris' total net worth
